“Did You Just Send $500 on Zelle?” — the Fake Fraud-Alert Scam
Posted 6 Sep 2026
A wave of scam texts and robocalls is hitting US bank customers with a fake fraud alert: “Wells Fargo Alert: Did you attempt a Zelle payment of $500.00 to [name]? Reply YES or NO.” The bank name, amount, and recipient change constantly — the format is the giveaway. Reply “NO”, and you get a call (or a number to ring) from a convincing “fraud department”.
To “reverse the fraudulent charge”, the fake agent tells you to send yourself a Zelle payment — but they’ve first had you change the email or phone number linked to your Zelle to one they control, so the money lands with them. Because Zelle is instant and treated like cash, it’s gone the moment you hit send. Your real bank will never ask you to do this.
What to Do
- Don’t reply to the text and don’t call a number it gives you — that number reaches the scammer, not your bank.
- Your bank will never ask you to send money to yourself (or to a “safe account”) to cancel or reverse a payment. That instruction is always the scam.
- Never share a one-time passcode, PIN, or online-banking login with someone who contacted you.
- Worried about your account? Hang up and call the number on the back of your card or in your banking app.
- Already sent money? Call your bank immediately to report and dispute it, then file at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
